05.05.2014 New Testament: Luke 24.13–16
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 24.1–35 on May 5, In the year of our Lord 2014
By Don Ruhl
After Jesus raised Himself from the dead, He appeared to various people, including two disciples as they walked from Jerusalem to Emmaus,
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him (Luke 24.13–16).
They were depressed, and they could not believe that this stranger was unaware of the events that had just transpired in Jerusalem; events that were about Him! For almost seven miles they talked, and they heard wonderful things from the lips of this stranger.
He rebuked them for their slow belief in the prophets, yet, the prophets had spoken about Jesus! Those two disciples experienced something wonderful as they heard the Author of the Scriptures, explain the Scriptures!
Yet, He also heard them as they explained the events that they had witnessed in those days, but failed to make a proper connection of those events with the prophecies. These men were not evil, but they still had difficulty understanding what the Lord had delivered through the prophets. The problem was not the Scriptures, but if you study carefully the thoughts of these two disciples, you will see that the problem was their preconceived ideas. However, they placed their hopes in Him, and so He expounded upon the Scriptures for them.
What would He hear, if He heard two disciples of His talking with one another today? He knows that you want to know the meaning of Scripture. He knows that you want to see the daily application of Scripture in your life. Keep reading and meditating upon the Bible and as time goes on, you will understand more, but be patient with yourself, and do not expect to understand everything right away.
