Athaliah became queen of Judah by killing her grandsons after her son died. However, she missed one grandson, he was only one year old and his aunt hid him from his murderous and power-hungry grandmother.
Six years later, the high priest Jehoiada revealed the actual king, although Joash was only seven years old at the time. However, it was time to make him king and to rid the land of Athaliah,
And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, “Take [Athaliah] outside under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not kill her in the house of the Lord.” So they seized her; and she went by way of the entrance of the Horse Gate into the king’s house, and they killed her there (2 Chronicles 23.14–15).
She reaped as she had sown, for even as that is a law of nature, so it is a law of the spirit. She killed, therefore, she was killed.
