Who or what was John the Baptist? He was the forerunner to Jesus. A king needs someone to go before him to announce his arrival, and to prepare people to receive their king. Yet, amazingly, look at the function Jesus served for us,

…where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 6.20). 

He went before us, even us, to prepare the way for us and that heaven might receive us! Why would He do such a thing for us sinners? He loves us with a love that goes beyond our wildest imagination.
