Working with the Holy Spirit

Acts Bible Background

07.09.2015 New Testament: Acts 15.28–29

To read the Bible in a year, read Acts 15.22–41 on July 9, In the year of our Lord 2015

By Don Ruhl

After hearing from Peter, Barnabas, Paul, and James, the church in Jerusalem decided what they should tell the Gentiles who were coming into the church,

“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell (Acts 15.28–29).

Somehow the Holy Spirit communicated to them His will in the matter, and these men reasoned among themselves, and they considered the prophets, leading them to conclude that they should tell the Gentile converts to abstain from:

  • Things offered to idols
  • Blood
  • Things strangled
  • Sexual immorality

The Holy Spirit taught them that if they kept themselves from those things, the people would do well.
