Israel’s government fell because they did not fear the Lord

Hosea Bible Background

12.11.2015 Old Testament: Hos 10.3–4

To read the Bible in a year, read Hosea 9–11 on December 11, In the year of our Lord 2015

By Don Ruhl

Israel eventually came to know why their kings failed and that any future king could not help them,

For now they say,
“We have no king,
Because we did not fear the Lord.
And as for a king, what would he do for us?”
They have spoken words,
Swearing falsely in making a covenant.
Thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field.
(Hosea 10.3–4)

Idolatry certainly topped the list of Israel’s sins, but so did making false covenants, that is not agreeing to do what they promised to do. Therefore, the judgment of the Lord fell upon them.
