A mocking that had no backing

Matthew Bible Background

02.14.2016 New Testament: Matt 27.41–43

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 27.32–66 on February 14, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

As Jesus hung on the cross in great agony, His enemies showed no mercy, but heaped insult upon Him,

Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God’” (Matthew 27.41–43).

Do you think that if Jesus had suddenly come down from the cross that they would have believed? No, they had not believed any of His other miracles, including raising people from the dead. Why would they believe this one?

Therefore, they had no intention of backing up their mockery. They hated Him, and they wanted Him to suffer as much as possible.
