The Lord wanted Israel to celebrate in feasts

Leviticus Bible Background

02.16.2016 Old Testament: Lev 23.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Leviticus 22–23 on February 16, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

The Lord redeemed His people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt and out of the house of bondage. He wanted Israel to have feasts annually in remembrance of the various things that He had done and would continue to do for them, especially remembering the Exodus,

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts’” (Leviticus 23.1–2).

The Lord had done so much for His people. Then He wanted them to do somethings for Him, including having these “holy convocations.” The children of Israel should have engaged in these gladly and willingly, knowing that by doing so, they honored the One who honored them.

What has the Lord done for you? Do you honor Him? Do you assemble with the church every Lord’s Day to show Him what you think of Him?

  1. I like Tony Campolo’s spin on this. The Church, if it fails to celebrate, actually encourages the seeker to look for joy elsewhere: the bar, the restaurant, the stadium, rtc. If we don’t model the fun of real life, the Enemy is happy to replicate it at great codt and eventually, bondage. Time to oarty Church, but in ways that are life-giving! Thanks!
