The Lord longs for people who will obey Him

Deuteronomy Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read Deuteronomy 5–7 on March 8, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

The children of Israel told Moses that they feared going into the presence of the Lord, but that they wanted Moses to enter the Lord’s presence, hear what He wanted Israel to do, and for Moses to tell them, and they would do it.

Here is how the Lord responded to their promise to obey Him,

“Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! Go and say to them, ‘Return to your tents’” (Deuteronomy 5.29–30).

The Lord knew that very little time would pass before they disobeyed Him, and not just in a moment of stumbling, but in flat out rebellion against Him. Hear Him wish that He would have a people who just did what He said. If you are a parent, you know what He meant.

Questions:

  • Can the Lord count on you to do as He says, or do you look for ways around it?
  • If it is not well with you, have you checked your obedience or lack thereof?
