You have probably noticed in the Gospel Accounts that of the 12 disciples Jesus had three close friends: Peter, James, and John, and of those three, Jesus and John had the closest friendship. He also had close friends outside of the apostles,

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick” (John 11.1–3).

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were close as siblings, but then they all knew Jesus well and He knew them well, so much so that the sisters referred to their brother as one whom Jesus loved.

Jesus loves all people, but in the days of His flesh He developed close friendships even as we do.

Questions:

  • Do you think of Jesus as your friend?
  • Do you want to be like Him?
