David knew that the Lord would destroy evildoers, and so David let the Lord know how he would act,

But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy;
In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.
(Psalm 5.7) 

Rather than turning to idols, David would go to the Lord’s house and find mercy, and David’s fear of the Lord moved him to worship the Lord there as well.
