When calamities strike you

Psalms Bible Background

07.29.2016 – Old Testament: Psa 57.1

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 56–58 on July 29, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

We do not know why they happen, but they just do, that is, some kind of calamity hits us and then another and another, and sometimes we think it will not stop. When that happens, do as David did,

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!
For my soul trusts in You;
And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge,
Until these calamities have passed by.
(Psalm 57.1)

David did not mean that he only wanted God during the troubles, but that he especially needed God during those times, and in particular, David needed an outpouring of God’s mercy. Then David explained why: His soul trusted in God and David took refuge in the shadow of God’s wings.

Questions:

  • In whom or in what do you trust?
  • Does your life show it?
  • Do your prayers show it?
