You have not cleansed your heart in vain

Psalms Bible Background

08.04.2016 – Old Testament: Psa 73.13–14

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 73–74 on August 4, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

Asaph wrote Psalm 73 to show us his thoughts as he compared his life with the lives of the wicked, for he sought to follow the Lord, but those who did not follow the Lord did better in life, and that made Asaph question whether he had washed his heart in vain,

Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain,
And washed my hands in innocence.
For all day long I have been plagued,
And chastened every morning.
(Psalm 73.13–14)

It was as though he thought all his actions to do the right proved fruitless. However, you have to keep reading the Psalm to discover what he eventually discovered.

Questions:

  • Have you struggled with the same issue as Asaph?
  • Have you resolved it yet?
  • If so, what did you do to resolve it?
