It matters what you say, how you say it, and when you say it

Proverbs Bible Background

09.14.2016 – Old Testament: Pro 25.11–12

To read the Bible in a year, read Proverbs 25–27 on September 14, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

Some people brag about speaking their mind, not caring what they say, how they say it, or when they say it. If anyone does not like it, these arrogant proclaimers will say, then they do not have to listen. However, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit says,

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver.
Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold
Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.
(Proverbs 25.11–12)

Our words should be fitly spoken, and we should use wisdom in rebuking. Granted, we will offend some people no matter what. However, let it be said before God that we should to follow His word on how to talk.

Questions:

  • Have you unnecessarily hurt others with your words?
  • Has someone hurt you?
  • What did you do about both situations?
