What false prophets will do to you

Jeremiah Bible Background

10.28.2016 – Old Testament: Jer 23.16–17

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 23–24 on October 28, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

Many are the people who stand up and claim to speak for the Lord, but they have only imagined a message or vision in their hearts, and it did not come from the Lord. As the Lord had Jeremiah say to the people,

Thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.
They make you worthless;
They speak a vision of their own heart,
Not from the mouth of the LORD.
They continually say to those who despise Me,
The LORD has said, ‘You shall have peace’;
And to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say, ‘No evil shall come upon you.’”
(Jeremiah 23.16–17)

One way this continues to happen today is when men claim to know the time of the end, or when they claim even to know the general time of the end, but so far everyone of them has failed. Not one of them spoke from the Lord, but from their own hearts.

Questions:

  • Are you apt to listen to those who predict the end?
  • If so, why do you listen to such so easily?
