12.17.2016 – Old Testament: Oba 17–18
To read the Bible in a year, read Obadiah on December 17, In the year of our Lord 2016
By Don Ruhl
The Book of Obadiah may be small in volume, but it spelled the end for the nation of Edom, and for the Edomites that means the Book of Obadiah had a large message. The Book contrasts the outcomes of the Edom and Israel,
“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance,
And there shall be holiness;
The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau shall be stubble;
They shall kindle them and devour them,
And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau,”
For the LORD has spoken.
Jacob is Israel and Esau is Edom. Both were sons of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Jacob followed the way of his father and grandfather, but Esau chose a different way with the result that Edom vanished from the face of the Earth.
What we choose for ourselves can have lasting effects, affecting later generations whom we will never meet.
- What life have you chosen for yourself?
- What did previous generations choose for themselves, but which also affect you?
