What happened to the Cherethites?

Zephaniah Bible Background

12.24.2016 – Old Testament: Zep 2.4–7

To read the Bible in a year, read Zephaniah on December 24, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

During the reigns of David and Solomon, a group of special warriors from the seacoast, quite possibly from the Philistines, or a neighbor of the Philistines, served those kings. Second Samuel and First Kings show them as loyal servants and probably bodyguards of David and Solomon. Yet, something happened to the Cherethites, because hundreds of years later, the Bible says this,

For Gaza shall be forsaken,
And Ashkelon desolate;
They shall drive out Ashdod at noonday,
And Ekron shall be uprooted.
Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast,
The nation of the Cherethites!
The word of the LORD is against you,
O Canaan, land of the Philistines:
“I will destroy you;
So there shall be no inhabitant.”
The seacoast shall be pastures,
With shelters for shepherds and folds for flocks.
The coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah;
They shall feed their flocks there;
In the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down at evening.
For the LORD their God will intervene for them,
And return their captives.”
(Zephaniah 2.4–7)

Both the Philistines and the Cherethites have disappeared, something which has happened many times since the foundation of the world, because peoples, tribes, and nations forsake the good and righteous way and the Lord has to remove them from the Earth.

Questions:

  • What can you do to help your nation continue to do righteous things?
  • Are you a loyal person?
