A wealthy woman had helped Elisha the prophet, providing him a place to live. He wanted to repay her, and he found out that she had no children. He then told her that she would have a son the following year.
After the child was several years old, he died. She went back to the prophet and told him what happened, and that she would not leave Elisha’s side,
And the mother of the child said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. Now Gehazi went on ahead of them, and laid the staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing. Therefore he went back to meet him, and told him, saying, “The child has not awakened” (2 Kings 4.30–31).
She knew that Elisha was the key and she would not let him out of her sight. She would stay right with him all the way back to her home, and he was committed to go there, but he sent Gehazi first that perhaps the child could be brought back before his mother arrived.
