Peter denied Jesus three times. Later Jesus asked Peter three questions, but it grieved Peter to have the Lord continue to ask questions,

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep” (John 21.17).

Peter had promised loyalty to the Lord, motivated by deep love for Jesus. Then Jesus wanted to know whether Peter still loved the Lord. Jesus kept asking Peter whether He loved the Lord. It was as though, in Peter’s mind, the answer to the first two questions did not suffice for the Lord. Yet, the Lord asked for that love, and that love should have moved Peter to obey the Lord and to take care of His sheep.

Questions:

  • Do you love Jesus more than anything and anyone?
  • Do you love Jesus?
  • Again, do you love Jesus?
