Misapplying someone’s suffering

Job Bible Background

07.01.2017 – Old Testament: Job 22.4–5

To read the Bible in a year, read Job 21–22 on July 1, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

Job suffered; everyone could see it. However, not everyone, truly no one, could see why he suffered. His friends thought that they knew. Listen to what Eliphaz implied,

“Is it because of your fear of Him that He corrects you,
And enters into judgment with you?
Is not your wickedness great,
And your iniquity without end?”
(Job 22.4–5)

Eliphaz implied that Job did not fear God, and we know from the first two chapters that Job’s fear of God is the theme of this Book, for there the Bible revealed to us that Job did fear God, but Satan thought that Job feared God because God had allegedly bribed Job.

Rather than fearing God, Eliphaz stated that Job had great wickedness in his life, and for that God sought to correct Job.

Even the wise and knowing can miss the point of things.

Questions:

  • Have you suffered?
  • Why do you think you have suffered?
