Preachers have needs and wishes just like anyone else. However, the Corinthian Christians seemed to have a problem with that fact. Therefore, Paul wrote to them,

If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? (1 Corinthians 9.12–13).

While Paul and his team had the right to enjoy a salary from the church at Corinth, yet, he decided not to take it, because he did not want it to become an issue with the brethren there. However, he reminded them that the priests serving in the temple of God ate of the sacrifices that the Israelites brought.

Questions:

  • Is your congregation paying your preacher enough or do you complain about the amount he makes?
  • How many young men are getting into preaching today?
