Speech has to harmonize with your character

Proverbs Bible Background

09.10.2017 – Old Testament: Pro 17.7

To read the Bible in a year, read Proverbs 17–18 on September 10, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

We expect people to speak language that fits their position or harmonizes with their character, as Solomon wrote,

Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool,
Much less lying lips to a prince.
(Proverbs 17.7)

Fools do not generally speak excellent things because they are foolish. Likewise, we do not expect princes or other leaders to lie to us, but they need to tell us the truth.

Questions:

  • Do you speak as a fool or as a prince?
  • Do you lie or speak excellent speech?
