When we learn of poor brethren suffering in other locations, it not only helps them, but something else happens,

For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God… (2 Corinthians 9.12). 

People thank God for the generosity of Christians. True, some people just take advantage of it, but others see the good happening and praise God for it.
