When evangelists go out, going away from home, going to another nation even, they depend upon the people back home to continue their support that they might dedicate themselves entirely to the work of the Lord. Some supporters become fickle, but others remain committed,
Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account (Philippians 4.15–17).
They were no doubt grateful to Paul and they also believed in what he was doing. He had a message that, if believed and obeyed, delivers from the wrath to come. They wanted to make sure then, that he had all his necessities met. In turn, whatever good he did was to their credit!
