11.10.2017 – New Testament: Heb 7.17
To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 7 on November 10, In the year of our Lord 2017
By Don Ruhl
The writer of the Book of Hebrews explained that Jesus is our High Priest. However, for Him to be the priest the Law had to change to allow His priesthood, for priests were only to come from the tribe of Levi and the high priests had to be descendants of Aaron, but Jesus came from the tribe of Judah and His priesthood would not be based on that of Aaron’s. Therefore, the writer quoted the Old Testament itself, showing that it anticipated the priesthood of Jesus and that it would be different than Aaron’s,
For He testifies:
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
The priesthood of Melchizedek, a man we meet briefly in Genesis 14, was not based on genealogy, as was that of Aaron’s, and so the priesthood of Jesus would resemble that of Melchizedek’s, who was both king and priest, even as Jesus is, but Aaron never was king, just priest.
- What does it mean for you that Jesus is your High Priest?
- Do you know what He does for you as the High Priest?
