In Romans 11.22 Paul wrote of the goodness and severity of God, and in Ezekiel 5, the Bible shows that severity,

“And I will do among you what I have never done, and the like of which I will never do again, because of all your abominations. Therefore fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments among you, and all of you who remain I will scatter to all the winds” (Ezekiel 5.9–10).

The people of God insisted on their sin, and so God would insist on their punishment. They had done abominable things, and so He would make sure that they experienced something abominable. They failed to see the holiness of God and would suffer for their lack of spiritual vision. They did not know, because they chose to be ignorant, of the jealousy of God and that He would not share the affections of His people with dumb idols.
