Endless examples

Hebrews Bible Background

11.16.2017 – New Testament: Heb 11.32

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 11.20–40 on November 16, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

The writer of the Book of Hebrews encouraged his readers to continue in the faith, showing how many have gone before us living by faith, although they did not experience all of the Lord’s blessings on the earth. He could have provided many more examples, leading him to say,

And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets… (Hebrews 11.32).

When I read those words, it causes me to think of other biblical examples that the writer could have used. I think that is the effect he wants to create, as we in our minds start scanning the biblical landscape, thinking of others who lived by faith, although they did not enjoy all the spiritual blessings that we do.

Questions:

  • If the Old Testament saints could continue in the face of difficult times, can you?
  • Do you sometimes forget to live by faith?
