The Lord gave Daniel visions, but he did not understand them until the Lord gave Daniel the insight to understand them. The prophet learned that the 70-year Babylonian captivity had been fulfilled, so he prayed to God. In response, the Lord sent Gabriel to help Daniel understand some things,

And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision…” (Daniel 9.22–23). 

Then Gabriel gave Daniel what we call Daniel’s Seventy Weeks in which Gabriel revealed the time when the Messiah would arrive on earth and begin His ministry and how long it would last.
