12.14.2017 – Old Testament: Amos 2.13–16
To read the Bible in a year, read Amos 1–3 on December 14, In the year of our Lord 2017
By Don Ruhl
Starting at Amos 2.6, the prophet recorded the Lord’s denunciation of Israel. He had blessed them mightily, but they had sinned repeatedly and encouraged one another to sin. Therefore, He declared,
“Behold, I am weighed down by you,
As a cart full of sheaves is weighed down.
Therefore flight shall perish from the swift,
The strong shall not strengthen his power,
Nor shall the mighty deliver himself;
He shall not stand who handles the bow,
The swift of foot shall not escape,
Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself.
The most courageous men of might
Shall flee naked in that day,”
Says the LORD.
Israel had weighed the Lord down with their sins, because they continued in sin, but He had not punished them fully. The existence of their sin and their impenitence became a burden to the Lord that He had to offload. Therefore, He told them exactly what He would do. However, they did not repent and He later sent Assyria against His own people.
- Are you weighing the Lord down?
- Do you excuse the sin in your life or do you repent of it?
