Fainting from not being able to drink the words of the Lord

Amos Bible Background

12.16.2017 – Old Testament: Amos 8.13

To read the Bible in a year, read Amos 7–9 on December 16, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

The Lord spoke through Amos that He would send a famine in the land of Israel, but the nature of this famine would be different than anything they had experienced before. It would not be a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.

Then the children of Israel would search desperately for that which they once despised, yet, they would not be able to find it. Failing to hear the word of God would affect them greatly,

“In that day the fair virgins
And strong young men
Shall faint from thirst.”
(Amos 8.13)

I think that the average person does not realize how much hearing the words of the Lord affect us in a positive way. However, if you have been into it for years, and then quit reading it and quit hearing the teaching and the preaching of it, you will notice something missing in your life. Gradually you will become weary in the spirit and faint in heart.

  • If you go a couple of days without reading the Bible, do you miss it?
  • How does the word of God affect you?
