When Rome, the mighty power of the earth, would fall, it would affect many other nations, for they all traded with her and relied upon her in many ways. Therefore,

“They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate’” (Revelation 18.19).

You cannot build a huge empire like Rome’s without affecting all the nations that surround it. Thus, when such an empire falls, there will be great wailing, for these people had not put their trust in the Lord, but in their own prosperity.
