Why we struggle with the earth

Genesis Bible Background

01.02.2018 – Old Testament: Gen 3.17–19

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 3–5 on January 2, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Adam ate from the tree from which God had made clear he was not to eat. Consequently, God changed the earth for man, making it not so friendly as it had been in the beginning,

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

‘Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.’”
(Genesis 3.17–19)

From some time shortly after the beginning, man has had to work hard, toiling, and sweating to get his food from the earth. Since that time, we now die and our bodies return to the dust from which we have been created. This all happened because Adam violated the commandment of God. God knows what He is doing with the instructions and commands He delivers to us. Let us therefore, do as He says.
