John the Baptist told Herod that he broke God’s law by taking his brother’s wife, and for that she wanted to kill John, and the Bible explains why she could not initially,

Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee (Mark 6.19–21).

She did not want to risk Herod’s wrath. Therefore, she waited. She knew that an opportunity would come up. Then it happened, and she took it, and worked to get Herod to order the death of John.

Watch out, because your critics want to bring you down. Do not give them an opportunity by sinning, because an opportunity you cannot control will present itself to your enemies, but you stay focused on the Lord and His instructions for daily living.

Questions:

  • Has someone taken advantage of a situation to put you down?
  • What can you do to protect yourself?
