By Don Ruhl

Luke began his genealogy of Jesus Christ in Luke 3.23, showing Jesus to be the adopted son of Joseph, and the grandfather of Jesus on Mary’s side was Heli. Luke continued,

…the son of Matthat…the son of David… (Luke 3.24–31).

The genealogy of Jesus went back to at least David, and Luke even goes all the way to Adam. This was important, because the Christ had to be a descendent of David (2 Samuel 7), and Jesus was a descendant on both sides of His family, on Joseph’s side (Matthew’s Account), and on Mary’s side (Luke’s Account).

God kept His promise to bring the son of David into the world and later Jesus would ascend back into heaven and sit down on the right hand of the throne of God.

Questions:

  • Do you believe with all your heart that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ of prophecy?
  • How far back can you trace your genealogy?
