04.04.2018 – New Testament: Luke 9.54–56
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 9.37–62 on April 4, In the year of our Lord 2018
By Don Ruhl
The disciples of Jesus felt a strong loyalty to Him, so much so that two of His disciples wanted to burn up a city of Samaria because they did not receive Jesus,
And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village (Luke 9.54–56).
Many people want to move forward the doctrine of Christ with such a spirit, but that is not what you see Jesus doing in the Gospels, nor do you see His apostles employing those methods later.
Questions:
- As a Christian, are you here to destroy men’s lives or to save them?
- How did Jesus handle the people who disagreed with Him?
