A city in Benjamin had committed a great sin, but the tribe of Benjamin refused to turn over the wicked men to the rest of the nation. Therefore, Israel had to fight Benjamin to eliminate the evil, yet, doing so came at a great cost,
So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah. Then the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites (Judges 20.19–21).
Israel lost more men in the next two battles with Benjamin, but eventually Israel prevailed. The tribes of Israel fought their own brother, and that was not to be taken lightly, yet, Israel was willing to do what had to be done to remove the evil from among them.
