Sickness for the glory of God

John Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read John 11.1–17 on May 28, In the year of our Lord 2018

Martha and Mary sent a message to Jesus, telling Him that the one He loved, their brother, was sick. Lazarus would die from his illness. However, when Jesus heard the message from the sisters, He said something amazing:

“This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (John 11.4).

Here is one of those rare times when Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of God, but He knew that the illness of Lazarus would be for the glory of God and through it all, Jesus would receive glory.

Questions:

  • Have you thought of your illnesses and eventual death as a way to glorify God?
  • How can you glorify God when you are sick?
