To read the Bible in a year, read Ezra 1–2 on June 12, In the year of our Lord 2018
By Don Ruhl
As you read the second chapter of the Book of Ezra, you may ask why you have to read the numbers of people who returned from Babylonian captivity. What you are supposed to do is compare those numbers to the numbers that came out of Egypt and entered the promised land. It is the same with the following:
Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five, their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and their donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty (Ezra 2.66–67).
Compare that to the wealth they brought out of Egypt, which was so much they could build the tabernacle with valuable things. Then centuries later, because of their sin, they had little left, and relatively few animals that they brought from Babylon. Sin humbles a nation.
- Has sin humbled you?
- What material things has God given you?
