Perhaps God will forgive you

Acts Bible Background

06.27.2018 – New Testament: Acts 8.22–23

To read the Bible in a year, read Acts 8.1–25 on June 27, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

A convert in Samaria sought to purchase the gift of God with money, but Peter rebuked him and told him:

“Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity” (Acts 8.22–23).

Notice that Peter put the convert on alert that if he repented and prayed, “perhaps” God would forgive the thought of the man’s heart.

Do you find that shocking? We have become accustomed to thinking that forgiveness comes easy, just by asking and then going on our merry way. We often treat forgiveness like it is no big deal, forgetting how offensive sin is to the holy God, and forgetting the price that was paid that we might have forgiveness.

Therefore, Peter wanted this new convert to know that forgiveness does not come cheaply.

Questions:

  • How do you view forgiveness?
  • Do you treat sin lightly?
