Do you know where light lives?

Job Bible Background

07.08.2018 – Old Testament: Job 38.19–21

To read the Bible in a year, read Job 38–39 on July 8, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Job thought that he knew how things should operate and thought that he had ideas better than God’s on how to deal with someone in Job’s situation. However, the Lord asked Job a series of questions, all designed to show Job that he spoke out of ignorance. Here are some questions the Lord asked Job:

“Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place,
That you may take it to its territory,
That you may know the paths to its home?
Do you know it, because you were born then,
Or because the number of your days is great?”
(Job 38.19–21)

If Job could answer questions such as these, then the Lord acknowledged that Job could contend with the Lord, but Job could not do it, showing him just how ignorant he was.

Notice the last part that the Lord said to Job, using sarcasm, that since Job was so old, he should know everything, but Job knew that his few years did not come close to comparing with the eternality of God and with His vast knowledge and wisdom.

Questions:

  • What do you think of God’s knowledge?
  • Do you think God knows how to run the universe and your life?
