We hurt because of those who will not keep God’s law

Psalms Bible Background

08.23.2018 – Old Testament: Psa 119.129–136

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalm 119.105–176 on August 23, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Those of us who meditate on the word of God know what the psalmist meant when he said:

Your testimonies are wonderful;
Therefore my soul keeps them.
(Psalm 119.129)

The psalmist considered the Lord’s testimonies wonderful because:

  • His words give light (v. 130)
  • His words give direction (v. 133)

Therefore, he longed for the Lord’s commandments (v. 131), seeking mercy from the Lord (v. 132), seeking redemption (v. 134), wanting the Lord to make His face shine upon him (v. 135). However, not everyone sees the word of God that way. Therefore, when the psalmist thought about those people, he said:

Rivers of water run down from my eyes,
Because men do not keep Your law.
(Psalm 119.136)

Truly, it confuses us that the people of the world have no desire to do or to live as the Lord teaches. It breaks our hearts that they think they have a better way.

Questions:

  • How have you reacted to those who will not keep the word of God?
  • Was there a time when you would not keep it?
  • Why did you change back to keeping it?
