09.01.2018 – Old Testament: Psa 149.6b–9
To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 148–150 on September 1, In the year of our Lord 2018
By Don Ruhl
Psalm 149 shows ways that we can praise the Lord by singing to Him (v. 1), rejoicing in Him (v. 2), praising Him in celebrations (v. 3), letting our words praise Him (vv. 5–6a), and by using our two-edged sword:
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,
To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;
To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute on them the written judgment—
This honor have all His saints.
Praise the LORD!
We understand now that the church does not function as an army the same way that Israel did, but we are still an army, wielding the two-edged sword of the Spirit (the word of the Lord, Ephesians 6.17), and by doing so, we bring the Lord’s judgments into the world, hopefully moving the world to repent and to follow Jesus Christ.
- Do you see yourself as a warrior for Jesus Christ?
- Do you know how to wield the sword of the Spirit?
