People will criticize you regardless of what you do

Matthew Bible Background

01.14.2019 – New Testament: Matt 11.16–19

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 11 on January 14, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

John the Baptist did not do some things that Jesus did and John did some things that Jesus did not do, and they were both criticized for what they did or did not do:

“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, and saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not lament.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children” (Matthew 11.16–19).

Whether abstaining or engaging, the same people criticized John and Jesus, because the critics did not have valid objections, but hated righteous men. Even so shall it be with you. Whether you abstain or engage, you will have critics, but as long as you live according to the Scriptures, do not let the critics get to you.

Questions:

  • How do you handle criticism?
  • Are you critical?
