I love Peter, don’t you? If we had been in his place, would we have affirmed our relationship to Jesus or would we have denied Him as Peter did? Whatever we would have done, from a human perspective, we can understand or sympathize with Peter’s first denial. He was caught off guard, or something, but then the Bible says:

And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.” But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!” (Matthew 26.71–72).

Unfortunately, Peter denied Jesus a second time. Peter knew Jesus well and of course, Jesus knew Peter even better. Peter was fiercely loyal to Jesus, but seeing what was happening to Him got to Peter and fear filled his heart, leading him to do something that he never thought that he would do.

  • Have you done something that you thought you would never do?
  • If it was something sinful, what did you do about it?
