Jehovah God wanted the children of Israel to destroy the inhabitants of the Land of Canaan completely. However, Israel did not do so. Of the tribe of Manasseh, the Bible says:
However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.
– Judges 1.27–28
Although Israel had the God of heaven on their side, their faith was weak and the sheer determination of the Canaanites outworked the tribe of Manasseh. If Manasseh had followed the Lord fully, they could have driven out the Canaanites. Sadly, by not driving them out, Israel learned to adopt the practices of the Canaanites and suffered constantly as a result.
