A time to fall on your face

Judges Bible Background

04.04.2019 – Old Testament: Jdg 13.19–21

To read the Bible in a year, read Judges 12–14 on April 4, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

What would do if you saw a man ascend into heaven, going up with the flame from a fire that you had started? Watch the future parents of Samson:

So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it upon the rock to the LORD. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on—it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground. When the Angel of the LORD appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the LORD.

– Judges 13.19–21

That was certainly an appropriate response, and it was unrehearsed. It was something that they did automatically.

You may find yourself doing the same thing when you have meditated on God, for example, and His awesomeness amazes you, that you either praise Him by looking up with uplifted hands, or the feeling can be so humbling that you drop to the ground.

  • How does awareness of heaven, the divine, and so on affect you?
  • Have you spoken to others about it?
