04.16.2019 – New Testament: Luke 15.11–16
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 15.11–32 on April 16, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019
By Don Ruhl
Remember the Parable of the Prodigal Son? The younger son did not want to wait for his inheritance; he wanted it now:
“A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.”
– Luke 15.11–12
The younger son was like many of us. When he wanted something, he wanted it NOW! He wanted to have the “good” life now and not at some unknown time in the future, such as in heaven.
Shortly after receiving the inheritance from his father, the younger son left and lived a wild and worldly life (v. 13). However, living foolishly, he spent all his money and then a horrible famine struck the country where he had gone to live (v. 14). He then started to live beneath the level he had when he lived at home without his inheritance:
“Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.”
He wanted everything now, but it did not produce the desired effect. He thought it would make his life better, but it made his life worse.
- Why does God not give you everything right now?
- Do you become a better man or woman by struggling through life?
