It is not a good idea to call into question God’s word

2 Kings Bible Background

Old Testament: 2Ki 7.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Kings 6–8 on May 13, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

It was time for a Syrian siege of Samaria to end. Elisha announced that end, but one of the king’s officers did not believe that it would happen:

Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the LORD: Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.” So an officer on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God and said, “Look, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” And he said, “In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it.”

– 2 Kings 7.1–2

Simple items soared in price during the siege, but Elisha announced that within 24 hours the prices would drop dramatically. An officer did not believe that the Lord could do such a thing.

That officer would see it happen, but he would not benefit from it because he would be dead.

Questions:

  • Do you believe that the Lord can or cannot keep His promises?
  • Can the Lord do the impossible?
