Listen to the one who knows the word

2 Chronicles Bible Background

Old Testament: 2Ch 18.8

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Chronicles 17–19 on June 5, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

King Ahab of Israel wanted King Jehoshaphat of Judah to join him in battle against Ramoth-Gilead, but Jehoshaphat wanted to know the word of Jehovah first. Therefore, Ahab summoned a prophet:

Then the king of Israel called one of his officers and said, “Bring Micaiah the son of Imla quickly!”

– 2 Chronicles 18.8

Ahab wanted Micaiah brought quickly, but not because he wanted to hear what the prophet had to say. Ahab just wanted to go conquer Ramoth-Gilead and so he did what he thought he had to do to persuade Jehoshaphat to ally with him.

Some people seek the word of the Lord, but not because they truly want to know what He says, but they just see it as a way to get what they want.

Questions:

  • Why do you seek the Lord’s word?
  • Do you seek to follow what He commands and teaches?
