08.27.2019 – New Testament: 1Co 8.13
To read the Bible in a year, read First Corinthians 8 on August 27, In the year of our Lord 2019
By Don Ruhl
We like our food and we have our favorites, but we should love our brother more than we love anything on this earth. Therefore, in First Corinthians 8, Paul explained how we are free to eat anything, but that consideration of our brother comes before our personal pleasure. He went so far as to say:
Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.
– 1 Corinthians 8.13
Paul could eat any kind of meat, including meat that had previously been offered to an idol and then the meat was sold at the local market. However, if a brother converted out of the religion of that idol, saw Paul eating that meat, that brother might stumble, still being used to the idol as something that he once believed was real. Therefore, Paul would not insist on having his food in front of that brother.
