10.01.2019 – Old Testament: Isa 23.15–18
To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 22–23 on October 1, In the year of our Lord 2019
By Don Ruhl
Proverbs 13.22 declares something that you do not hear very much about, but consider its message: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” Think about it, all that the world does, growing food, making clothes, paving roads, and so on, the Lord says they do for His people. The world does not know that they do those things for the church, but they do.
Likewise, Isaiah revealed that the Lord used Tyre for the benefit of Israel:
Now it shall come to pass in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:
“Take a harp, go about the city,
You forgotten harlot;
Make sweet melody, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.”
And it shall be, at the end of seventy years, that the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her hire, and commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. Her gain and her pay will be set apart for the LORD; it will not be treasured nor laid up, for her gain will be for those who dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for fine clothing.
– Isaiah 23.15–18
The Lord would punish Tyre for its sins, but the city would not learn the lesson. Therefore, when they returned from their captivity, they would return to their sin and whatever gains they made from their sin, the Lord would use for His people.
